It is definitely a MKIII for the french show, there's a pic kicking about of a clear shot of it. Oop's maybe not actually, see here for previous musings... forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=18" target="_blank">http://dam.10.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=18 Someone speculated that the earliest prototype version was essentially a MKII with a tone control, hmmm.

The mystery continues...... :?

... I had a big long debate about this with a rather pain in the ass pedal maker... He claims Page only used the MKIII for that tv show, but that the albert hall is a modded MKII. As a side note, he claims to have sussed the mod and uses this as a bit of a sales pitch. How could anyone know for sure that used a modified MKII?!?! Are there any articles where Page or the modifier states this to the true??? I've all sorts of rumours that Page selected his own transistors?!?! and he was present at the time the pedal was made?!!? I think too much is made about the entire Page/MKII or MKIII thing. Trust your ears and trust your eyes. He is plainly using a MKII on the Dutch (black and white) TV performance and also on the Super Show footage. You can see it pretty damn well and there is no denying that sound. The French TV footage looks very much like a Rotosound MKIII. From the little I've heard of the Albert hall stuff it sounds more like a MKIII than a MKII but who can say for sure?!?!? The MKIII saw the light of day in '68 so would it not make sense for him to use a more current fuzz box as it became available?!? ~Dave

Yes exactly, there is no way you can prove what mods were done, if any! He tried to deride me with a "I KNOW the difference between a MKII and A MkIII, I dont expect you to!". He used the tous en scene footage as a showcase of bad MKIII tone, and the albert hall as GREAT MKII. Different time, different amps, different recording equipment seemed to mean nothing to his theory. wanker! :P

Here's the page MKIII pic... looks very much like the rotosound pedal above...

Dazed and Confused- 02-06-2007

I can't see the pedal for Pagey's bright pants.

AbbeSauniere- 02-06-2007

What kind of mods is this pedal maker claiming were done to Page's MKII? I know of the Throbak MKII clone which is supposedly based on Page's "modified" MKII. Never tried it though. I've found the D*A*M to be pretty spot on for Page tones! So I couldn't imagine what types of mods would be required. :?

That is the only way you'd know 100% for sure that he had these "special" mods on his pedal. Surely if this pedal was around people would have to know about. Like Hendrix's pedals, they are in a freakin museum!! Let’s think about logically. Page acquires MKII from Sola Sound, no doubt from Macaris as they would be the only store selling the Sola Sound badged MKII. Supa Fuzz, Rotosound, the Vox MKII...same pedals but made for sale in different stores. Macaris must have been pretty buzzed that Jimmy was using a MKII. Now if they had modified it for him would it not make sense to apply these mods to other MKII's. I don't buy it. If you watch the full performance of the Dutch TV show you can see how he uses the pedal and how it responds to his playing style, volume control etc. I have been lucky enough to play through a few different original MKII's and that is pretty much how a stock MKII behaves. Any way, blah blah blah...I could go on all day. This shit does kinda piss me off though. Folks shouldn't assume or speculate what some guy used god knows how many years ago and make some magical bullshit up about it. ~Dave

Here's the page MKIII pic... looks very much like the rotosound pedal above... 99.99999% sure that is a Rotosound MKIII. The Sola Sound and Vox MKIII's all had black cases.

I sent you a pm Captain...

Click here to watch video clip again. I have often wondered what amp he was using in that video clip, is it an early sound city head? The input jacks are on the wrong side for a Marshall?

philip- 02-08-2007

It's an Arbiter power one hundred.

Mk II
The music thats coming from my mk ii is schweet. I cant believe how good this is. I have lent it to a few people, I think we may have some DAM converts.

gordon7987- 02-09-2007

It's an Arbiter power one hundred. Cool, thanks for that! Is that a clean sounding amp. The reason I ask is I love the sound JP gets on that clip, and wondered if I should get a dedicated clean sounding amp for running a Mk2. I was thinking I could A/B something like that and my 18Watt marshall.

Stu- 02-10-2007

They are fairly clean at moderate volume, Cranked right up there's some crunch, but nothing like a Marshall. On the early Zep stuff, you're mainly hearing the fuzz box. I have a couple of original MkIIs, MkIIIs and an Arbiter 100. For the record, I don't believe the modded MkII story either.
