THIS WHOLE THREAD IS MAKING ME FEEL KINDA "FUNNY" !

Dave- I think you may be right...makes sense as no other transistors were ever used except OC75s in Marshall pedals and the MarkIVs and other early Sola Pedals used the same tan resisors halk my SF uses.
theemadcap1- 06-19-2008
Wouldn't they use what they had around, until it was gone and then get another replacement, until that ran out. Would make sense as to why they stopped making germanium TBs in the 70's, their stash ran out...? Notice how where the ger. diode goes, there are 3 holes for a transistor...this was made with what I think, was the earliest Erie pots made of ceramic, before the metal ones...(?)

Does this MarkIV have the same out put cap as the MKII?

Gold Rotosound Fuzz Box - Tonebender Mk2 Here are some much better pics of that Gold Rotosound Mk 2 for the record and our comparison:
Sorry for so many pics but its such a nice and rare pedal!!

Graham Strikes Again!
Tell me you didn't score this Rotosound from Carl!
AGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
ok, gonna compose myself.
After all, I did hope (was it A. B. or C?...) that someone *here* struck a deal and would hopefully consider loaning to El Capitan for DAM R&D....
Holy shit!
you bastard!!!
Your mother was a HAMSTER!! (and your father stank of the Elderberry.)
Ok, very envious.
OK, headache is coming on. Is it the heat? or the 5 beers I had this afternoon, or a serious envy migraine??
Nice pedal.
cheers.

What a non surprise... Graham grabbed the rotosound! :D
I envy your collection, but feel sorry for you wife.

Nice one!! I like the 'dust bunny' under the right circuit holder screw...been building since 1967. It does appear to be spot on the early SF circuit like Dave's old one. Would the original knobs be silver capped Marshall type? I think it looks good with chicken head knobs too, more MKI-ish...
Need to find out where you get the PP4 batteries...

I feel your pain times two. At least Graham got it. Argh, i'm gonna go play my Hiwatt now to drown my sorrows in sound.

That Was the same Rotosound MarkIII pedal I almost got...hesitation is a bitch! Glad it went to a good home!!!
Cheers!

Well I could have kept quiet but then I couldnt have joined in on this thread so fully - I was proactive (nice word meaning pushy) on this and others of Carls pedals for a long long time - he has some beautiful stuff and I consider myself very fortunate to have been in a position to get hold of some of it over the last few years :D Incidentally he reckoned that this pedal in Gold (or otherwise even) was every bit as rare as the original Mk 1's and that the paint might even have been the same (???same tin???) Whatever the case I love it and thought it worth taking the trouble to show it off properly - David knows that he can get his hands on it whenever (or if) he needs.
ADVERT TIME - I am still in the market for any of the more "exotic" British stuff though if there should happen to be any fine stuff lurking out there! Like most of us here I check ebay often but there seems to be less and less of the really nice early stuff turning up (maybe Sickle and Leon and Poorbob have grabbed it all!) saw that a really nice Hohner superfuzz made its way into one of our fellow forumites hands yesterday - be interested to know how that one compares to my unbadged black shin-ei version couldnt see from the pics how it was claimed as a Hohner??
 You know - maybe we ought to have a dedicated section where we could confine our ebay tittle tattle rather than have it spread thinly all across the place.. If enough others felt the same then maybe we could see how Dave feels about it??
Back to this pedal - it is in very decent condition despite being a little battle-worn. The only real damage is that the original battery clip has broken away inside - I made myself a foam cutout to keep the battery from rattling around but would like to find a replacement holder.
Incidentally John - you can get those reissued PP4's from "The Small Battery Company" google them and if you have problems then get back to me and I will send the details. Being Lithium based they are very light but rather expensive (although they should last a long time) I spoke to the Captain about whether or not their being Lithium might compromise / affect the performance of the pedals - he felt not.. It is nice to find a pedal which has the original battery clips still inside - generally its only Marshalls that I see with them still in - dont know why because most sixties pedals would have used them!
The gold paint appears to have been painted on top of the more usual silver stuff found on Rotosounds - you can see where the edges are chipped a bit - I thought at first that it might have been just a metallic undercoat but with a hand lense it does look like silver hammerite to me. Interesting!! In fact there are lots of things I find intriguing about this pedal - for instance what else went into this particular case?? Anyone know? - The knobs are not new but rather older MArshall "gold tops" which I think look neat against the gold paint but I have seen two other lots ofpictures of this pedal showing both Vox type chicken heads (dark brown) and more damaged Marshall/Park types missing their metallic capping. I asked Carl what was on it when he got it but havent heard back yet. I would have thought that the chicken heads would be the originally fitted items.
I am not in any way technically minded but the circuitry does look all straight to me - I saw no signs of newer soldering or incorrect looking components. I did try hard but couldnt identify any date codes on the pots or capacitors although there are codes on the transistors but I never yet worked out how to decode them - perhaps somebody here could enlighten us of put up some links to any online reource that might help. I suppose the pedal would be from around 1968 though maybe a year earlier - anyone know more??
Would you (any reader) think this is similar to the first model of Marshall Supa Fuzz (which I believe to be identical in most ways to the Vox Mk2 Professional same as PD's and the one that he captain had off Carl) or the earlier "prototype" Marshall version with the control knobs much closer together ?
Regarding that "mystical dust bunny" I had thought of putting it onto ebay - didnt I see a picture of Jimi playing through one of these?? maybe there is some special DNA inside it - in fact being slightly more tongue-in-cheek it might be as close as any of us ever get to "finding" Gary Hurst
Oh yes - the pedal sounds great as well - a really nice range of fuzz most of the way down the controls (unlike many early fuzzes where there isn't much worth bothering with below the maximum fuzz setting. There is plenty of tigh bass end without its being too flabby - nicely compressed rather than mushy is how I'd put it - big chords sound exactly like you want them too huge! and lead runs further up the neck have a great creamy sustain when maxed - although there is heaps of sustain there is maybe not quite as much distortion as on one or two slightly newer tonebenders - hard to describe really - not any shortage of filth rather its a bit more articulate - of course push it with humbuckers or a decent P90 through a set of hot valves and it will sing forever!. Pull back on the guitar volume a touch and it becomes a bit more defined on single note stuff and crunchier on chords . Just a very nice fuzztone really and every bit as nice as I had been hoping! As usual hope I havent bored the pants off you! Just like sharing and hope you can catch some of my excitement on this one

I support the ebay idea. We should make more of an awareness type sticky, or section even. That way, we could all benefit from it. Because if we just have a post in one Ebay topic, it would generate more post on that specific pedal sometimes, which get the thread off-topic. One topic for each pedal seems logical to me. Whenever something comes on ebay and someone notices, or notices something that someone else was interested in (like me with a Roto MKII  ), we would post it. It might generate more interest in the things you might want to bid on, but the marginal benefit of seeing something you might have missed makes it all worth it. IDK, maybe people wont like it and want to remain private, which I completely understand, but I haven't checked in forever lately, so I could really benefit from it.
BTW Graham, you are awesome. I hope I have your 1/10 of your gear in twenty years.

Graham-
Looks like it has the same bottom plate as the SF, is it the same size pedal? How many of the Rotosounds could have been made? 10-20 or less? Doesn't seem to be a mass produced piece. That gold one may be a one off(?) The circuit does look identical to the SF that Dave sold. So, would the SF and RS pedals be cast? How hard would it be to make one? One would need a cast, and then a crucible to melt the metal and pour it into the cast...quite a project! In the years of watching eSchmay, I have only seen 3 of the early SFs and 2 RS(all featured here). Including SF, RS, the Vox and Sola TB Pro MKIIs, total production run of 50, maybe 100? Couldn't have been too many?
Seems like the majority of SFs I have seen are the ones Dave postulates were made by Marshall, which after thinking about it, I think he nailed that down, after 68 Marshall probably made all the SupaFuzz pedals, why would they outsource something they could easily do 'in-house', with the later PCBs anyone could have wired up a SF...
So, following that premise, would all the early, pre 68 SF, RS and all MKIIs be wired up by Gary Hurst himself??
