I've wanted a Landgraff wah ever since I tried one earlier this year, but they're $500 and a year+ wait. Frustrating. I've heard that the Area 51 will get the same tones. Maybe I should just buy one of those.

Maybe I should just buy one of those. Yes, his prices have been on a steady increase every two months it seems like. I got in just before he raised his prices and I was thinking of getting a second, voiced differently but I just cannot afford it. I have never tried the Area 51, or heard of it, for that matter. I have been looking hard at the Wheels of Fire from Teese as an alternative to my Landgraff.

chicagowarmth- 03-15-2008

Well, I do like my Teese Wizard wah, but the Landgraff was a whole other level of wah-ness.

1bottlerocket- 03-15-2008

Wah-ness! Now that's an original. I am still figuring out what I like in wah pedals. I had a Teese Picture wah I liked, so that is why I thought the WoF might be a good alternative. I had some issues with it, I think maybe the sweep (I am guessing here on terminology) wasn't wide enough. I am referring to the range of sound you get from rocking the pedal.

chicagowarmth- 03-15-2008

Yeah, I think "sweep" is the correct term. You might want to look into a Colorsound wah, as those have a very wide sweep to them. I think the WoF is supposed to be similar, so that might work, too.

What did you like about the Landgraff you tried? As In understand it, he voices them all to the users different wishes.

I'd agree with CW - the Colorsound wah is generally outstanding - some of the later reissues are worth caution but I have used the plain grey ones since they were first available - I love vintage wahs and have had most of them and would say that the grey CS is as good as any - you get similar in the various mixtures they made - my all time favourites were the yellow wah/fuzz/swell variants - but the simple grey is a cool pedal to get - I saw one recently on ebay made peanuts at around £45 - also seen them on gbase at over $350 ! somewhere around the 80 - 120 pounds mark is probably the norm on ebay and makes them excellent value in comparison to say the equivalent Vox pedals from the same period which are not always that great sounding That blue one on ebay may not strictly be a wah fuzz swell as the narrow bodied blue ones tended to be wah-fuzz (also came in yellow/orange) or wah-fuzz-straight and not all of those allow for discrete use of one or other of the effects - although I have had a lot of stuff from that seller and he generally is very knowledgeable on the CS stuff - I also have a dozen or so of the CS wah fuzz variants and never saw a triple function (i.e with swell too) in a narrow body. The regular wah also came in the wider blue body and is essentially the same as the earlier grey ones

What did you like about the Landgraff you tried? As In understand it, he voices them all to the users different wishes. It just had this incredible vocal tone to it and no harshness at all. That's the best way I can describe it. However, I'm not sure any wah is worth $500. I'll probably get around to ordering the Area 51 sooner or later.

Graham: I used to have one of the Colorsound wah/fuzz/swell models (mine was yellow). The thing that really irritated me about it was that the switch to engage the wah was at the heel of the pedal and not easy to work with your foot. I was so used to the standard of the switch being at the toe that it really threw me for a loop. On top of that, there was no way to disengage the volume function, so I had no choice but to rock the pedal all the way back, therefore losing all volume, in order to get the wah engaged. Weird.

Graham- 03-15-2008

Yes - they came in most switching combinations - sometimes the switches are sticking through holes in the treadle sometimes not - othertimes annoyingly wired like you say (often in fact) a real pain in the a**- I thought I had every variation but keep coming across slightly different variants. For stage use (and all round most flexible) the one to get though is the later yellow one with the three separate controls on the top alongside the treadle - that has one switch (wah/vol) under the front of the treadle but a fuzz switch exposed on the top - Definitely a nice pedal!! If I get a chance I'll stick some pics up.

chicagowarmth- 03-15-2008

I've never seen the later yellow one you mentioned. Do you have any photos of that model?

Graham- 03-15-2008

Hi CW - here are some pics of that version of the CS sup wah-fuzz-swell, the main pics are of my favourite which is dated 20th March 1979 - there are two more pics, the other yellow one is also mine but from 1978 - just a slightly different switch but cosmetically and performance wise the same - the shiny chrome one is on my most hunted list - in the same chromed livery as the Colorsound Wah-Wah Supremo. These were the last (to the best of my knowledge) of the CS wah fuzz hybrids - by now incorporating the four transistor (BC184C) supa tonebender circuitry as opposed to the earler tonebender variants used in the preceding models which also lacked the controls. These models were capable of tweaking to get the same tonal range (to my ear) of the earlier designs but with the uprated fuzz circuit capable of more gain giving a much more saturated output - moving towards Big Muff territory. I am no electronics expert so if my descriptions of the circuitry are a bit slapdash please don't jump all over me! Colorsound Wah fuzzes have been my most favourite pedal for over twenty five years now - from an aesthetic view I prefer the earlier CS stuff but as mentioned before the idiosyncrasies of their wiring/switching can leave a bit to desire if using live and from that perspective these later ones are a lot better as well as sounding bloody fantastic. I am a bit new to posting here - if there is a better way like for example just posting links rather than the whole pictures then can someone please let me know - I am concerned that I may be using up too much space. Cheers G

Graham, Great reference photos! I never new about so many things. It would be cool to assemble these into a data base and begin building up a digital archive.

chicagowarmth- 03-16-2008

Cool. I have an old Colorsound Fuzzphaze that is housed in an identical enclosure, all silver. Sounds fantastic. Bottlerocket ... a buddy of mine AB'd the Landgraff wah with thee Area 51 and said he was able to get the same tones from both. He suggested that I get all of the control options that Area 51 has to offer. I plan to do so sooner or later, but for now I'm fairly satisfied with my Teese Wizard.
