Proanalog vs. DAM
Has anyone compared the two MKII pedals aside from that clip on youtube that isn't very good? I really want the DAM---but they're almost impossible to find...and some guy just put one up on ebay for 500 bucks...it's a little out of control

Can't comment. God, how's that for a helpful post ! I found D*A*M partially because (before I'd heard of Dave's Little Shop of Wonders) I was originally trying to get hold of the ProAnalog pedal. At the time he was only shipping to the U.S. From the tone on his web page he seemed to have a bit of an attitude too :D but I could be mistaken in that. They do get great reviews but I've never seen a direct comparison. Mike

Imo, Pro Analog MKII's have a more modern sound to them.

I have both DAM and Pro Analog MKll's... Let me start by saying both are great pedals and each has their own "thing". Both of the pedals I am comparing have OC81's. The DAM MKll has more full-on fuzz from the begining to the end of the attack dial. The PA pedal has more volume/clean and it cleans up completely with your guitar volume knob... where the DAM has some chewy fragments no matter what. This could be good or bad depending on what you are looking for. I love the DAM MKll with a tele... it's hard to beat. It's very authentic sounding IMO. If you want more headroom and flexibility the PA is a great pedal too. I agree with Philip, the PA MKll is slightly more modern sounding and refined compared to the DAM MKll. Again, this could be good or bad depending on what you are looking for. They are definitely different dogs. If you are looking for the DAM vibe wait it out. It's definitely worth the wait. Good luck! <M

Does your Pro Analog MKII have 2 or 3 OC81D's?

I had both long enough to do a thorough AB, since at the time I could only afford 1. Both had the OC81D/OC81Ds. Proanalog usually only put one per pedal, using it for the tone spot. Proanalog was definitely like a modern, 'improved" version. More of a hollow, scooped midrange with a more percussive, punchier attack and cleaner, but at the same time more muscular tone. Almost more distortion like, rather than all out fuzz like the D*A*M. It's like comparing a Hiwatt to a Marshall. The D*A*M is most definitely the more authentic sounding. At the time I was looking for a back up to my treasured Supa Fuzz, which ironically was purchased and restored by Proanalog.

Good luck! <M Spot-on Moods! I have the same two pedals: a D*A*M OC-81D loaded MKII and a Proanalog MkII with (1) OC81-D (1) OC75 & (1) OC71. I can't say more about the description than you have, only to add that I did get to try out an original 1960's MKII and my D*A*M MKII is closer in tone and feel to the original. But I must add that I really like them both very much. They would be the last two fuzz pedals I'd ever part with if I had to! The PA has some more tones on the clean-up side of things, which lends itself to some great shimmery/crunched rhythm sounds, while nothing gets that searing phat lead tone and gobs of smooth sustain like the D*A*M. Amazing tools for the studio and live work.

Hey Cubba! Guys this is tha man who has the best sounding DAM MKII with oc81d's that I've ever heard. My oc81d sounds killer, but Cubba's has something special going on. Good remarks about the PA.... my close friend has mine and won't give it back ;)

Psycho*Daisies- 09-20-2007

How would you describe the quality that makes that MKII different or better?

duende- 09-21-2007

I prefer MKII's to be very nasty and sputtery.... and have alot of gnarly grit detail when they gate or fuzz out. I also prefer them to have nice mid contant (hint of octave when you roll your volume down), as some can be very boomy or mid-scooped even. This is just my preferences mind you, other's may prefer smoother more OD-esque sounding fuzzes. But I like my fuzzes raw and unpredictable!

Yeah I once heard a Supa Fuzz that was like that. All crispy and trombone-like. Very nice indeed.

Psycho*Daisies- 09-22-2007

"trombone-like" ... interesting...yeah, a nice brassy sound is where it's at... i've always wanted to get a kind of baritone sax sound with fuzz guitar. Btw, my dad plays Principle Trombone with The Chicago Symphony Orchestra...he's held that position for 45+ years. (CSO tour takes them to Royal Festival Hall in London Oct. 5th & 6th...One of the pieces they're doing is Ravel's Bolero...there's a big trombone solo on that one...) One of the top classical trombonists in modern times. Supposedly he "raised the bar" as far as how good trombonists should be. www.jayfriedman.net I wonder if that's why I'm so into fuzz... 8)

Hey Psycho.. Is the Royal Fetival Hall the same as the Royal Albert Hall?? If so, I played there myself a few years back. Great venue, the stage hands wear cool hard hats! Look like they're working a construction site. :) That's super cool about your dad though... I have much respect for real classical musicians... especially these days when most people just use samples. Where abouts in CA are you? I'm in SF.
