"Battle Damage" Titan I just wanted to mention the arrival of this one .. in the Captain's words:
Thanks to the poltergeist that must inhabit my store room I have a rather battle scared sucker up for grabs, have to post a pic :D It reminds me of my X-Wing toy from when I was kid....it came with battle damage stickers that were just to cool.
Tried it out with a P90-loaded LP through a Fender amp and it sounded absolutely huge, not overly gainy but just enormous as others have mentioned. With different combinations of pickups and the tone knob it ranges from thick and sludgy to a nice cutting attack. I can see it being very useable in a live setting.
Looks great too .. I haven't taken any photos as I don't think I could do it any more justice than the original shot above. Could be Yorkshire Tea in the knob markers .. ?
"I want to come with you to Rotherham. There's nothing for me here now. I want to learn the ways of the Fuzz and become a Jedi like my father .."
:D

Congrats! Thems some serious battle scares... a real man's Titan! Does Dave charge extra for the "been there... done that" finish??? ;)
What fender amp you using??
mezcalhead- 10-30-2007
Actually the beaten up ones were cheaper .. this one by £15 and the less trashed one by £5 IIRC.
The amp is an old blackface Vibrolux Reverb, not really known for bone-crushing heaviness but the Titan gets it there, within the limitations of 2x10" speakers I guess.

Just think if it was a Fender "battle damaged" pedal... ;)

Oh I know it was cheaper. I was just being facetious!.
Dang you got an old vibrolux?? That's my dream amp. Seriously! I've been trying to fine a good price on one for years... but the timings always wrong... when one shows up, I'm low on funds..... when I have the funds.... none are to be found.
If you don't mind my asking, what speakers is yours loaded up with??
Best,
Alex

The VR has got Jensen C10Qs I think, which the previous owner had installed. The original speakers are here as well but I've never bothered to put them in so I'm not sure how the sound differs.
Hmm, do you think the Fender Custom Shop might start offering pedals, with varying levels of relicing? .. I've seen them do amps occasionally.

Well the C10Q's are great speakers, I actually prefer them in single ended amps like magnatones/valco and danelectro amps.
They sometimes can have a big mid presence and break-up. People often put swapped them in when they're after more of a tweed type of sound.
Now you got me curious at to the originals.... probably killer speakers.

big mid presence and break-up .. more of a tweed type of sound.
Interesting .. I have another VR as well, a '72 silverface with original speakers and the blackface definitely has more upper mids/chime/swirl/jangle/whatever you want to call it .. the silverface is more hi-fi/surfy.
I'd always figured it was the circuit but now you say that I guess there's the speakers to consider also. Maybe some rainy day I'll drop the originals back in and see how they compare.
:)

Believe it or not,
I've found choice of speakers to be one of the biggest factors, if not the biggest in the make-up of an amp's tone.
Anyways nice chatting with ya... Btw... ever drink Mezcal?? We used to smuggle the real shit across the border in orange juice containers as what they sell over the counter pale's by comparison. Cut open a watermelon and pour it in..... instant party! The local term, or at least the one I grew up with in Tucson Sonora for homemade mescal, is Bacanora or "mexican white lightning"
mezcalhead- 10-31-2007
No, I've drunk my fair share of scary stuff but never had mescal .. sounds interesting but pretty hard to come by over in the UK I would guess!

Actually I thought that but we've got a Mexican deli in Edinburgh that sells it - I imagine there would be similar in most big cities.

There must be a Mexican deli somewhere in Manchester .. right, I'm on a mission!
