Red Rooster review
I've had my rooster for a little while now, so thought I'd post a review. As a comparison, I've previously owned keeley, BSM and baron FX treble boosters. Firstly I cannot believe how quiet it is.Extremely low noise floor, my first impressions were I'd broken it, its that quiet. If you've played treble boosters before you'll be amazed too. Its got a LOAD of level.A LOT.More than any TB I've had before, or any boost/od for that matter. Its cleanish (but fat) up to about 3/4 up, then really starts to get hairy after that.Obviously it has a bit of noise at high levels, but nowhere near as much as a ts9 for example. The range knob is where the magic is.In the middle is pretty flat but fat, full up is bassy, to the right is trebley. The middle setting is great for boosting an amp without adding colour, really fattens things up without adding anything you don' want.Turn it up and you get that spluttery fuzzy type sound on the low notes.Great!!!turn the dial full anti colockwise and you get that 60'S/70'S CRUNCH, but it has to be the smoothest treble booster I've ever had.Its impossible to get it harsh. Also it doesn;t have that germanium colouring that some TB's have, its very smooth fat and transparent. I had a fun couple of hours messing around with various setting son my amp and the rooster.I got everything from sludge, crunchy rock, blues, sabbath, and even NAILED the eric bell early thin lizzy tone!! Basically this is the quie-*test*-('"), smoothest, fattast, loudest , most versatile treble booster I've ever owned, and I've owned a few.In fact its not really a "treble booster" its just a really great sounding versatile pedal. I've had a few of these TB's that claim to have "improved" the original design, which is a pretty bold statement from any builder. In general I don't agree, I like treble boosters, but even the high end ones tend to be harsh and very noisy with that germanium tinge that you can't dial out.I don;t see how that's much of an improvement on the original design. I have to say that the rooster is the only one that I actually think really has improved on the original design.Lower noise, more versatility, better more reliable and consistent sound, the D*A*M does exactly that and more. Fun AND practical!!Good in any rig, and has loads of uses.
